An introduction to managing communication in your tribunal room.

This full-day skills-based program for tribunal members focuses on developing and practising techniques to manage the tribunal room more effectively.  

Experienced coaches will guide you through interactive exercises that will build your confidence and give insight into improving your communication. 

In this practical workshop, you will:

  • Reflect on your tribunal hearing management style
  • Analyse your strengths, blind spots and how you are perceived
  • Practise and develop communication skills and techniques to effectively manage your hearings.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
Senior Member Charles Powles

Senior Member Powles is a deputy head of the Human Rights List at VCAT. He has been a member of VCAT since 2016, serving in the Residential Tenancies, Civil Claims, Guardianship and Administration, Owners Corporations, and Review and Regulation lists. Previously, he was a member of the Migration and Refugee Review Tribunal from 2010 to 2015.

Senior Member Domenico Calabro

Senior Member Calabro was appointed to the Tribunal in 2005 as a sessional member, becoming a full-time member in 2021, and then a senior member and deputy head of the Residential Tenancies List in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Initially, Domenico was appointed to six lists. Before joining VCAT, he served as a full-time member of the Refugee Review Tribunal and as a sessional member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal. He also worked as a lawyer and manager with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Job Watch Inc, Fitzroy Legal Service, and Victoria Legal Aid, where he held roles in community legal education, regional management, and as a director. Outside of his work with the Tribunal, Domenico enjoys making red wine and salami, among other activities.

Senior Member Catherine Aird

Senior Member Aird has been a member of VCAT for more than 25 years, and was initially appointed as an inaugural member of the Domestic Building Tribunal in April 1996. Catherine was appointed deputy president of VCAT in 2004 and held this position for 17 years. Catherine led several lists, including most recently the Building and Property List, which was created on 1 July 2014 by merging the Domestic Building, Retail Tenancies, and Real Property lists. Catherine retired from full-time work in May 2021 and now serves as a senior sessional member.

Simon Wood

Simon has been helping organisations and individuals build their leadership, sales, and customer service strength for nearly twenty years. Proven results, a client focus, and a love of learning enables him to deliver tailored, nuanced, and effective end-to-end solutions, from consultation, facilitation, and design through to delivering training and coaching. Simon’s background in psychology and coaching enables him to think critically and to design learning programs based on evidence; his performance background enables him to communicate persuasively and deliver strongly in the room; and his business experience enables him to adapt to different contexts quickly.

Raj Sidhu

Raj works in the corporate and business sector as a teacher, facilitator, and actor. He designs and delivers programs in leadership presence, communication strategy, leadership capability, behavioural insight and culture change, diversity and unconscious bias, conflict resolution, strategic thinking and planning, sales development, media coaching and presentation skills. He is a co-founder and company director of RealPlay Media and a pioneer in Theatre in Business in Australia along with Grant Dodwell. Raj studied sociology, psychology, drama and philosophy at Flinders University and has a degree in Performance as a NIDA graduate. Raj is a certified consultant and trainer in Human Synergistic LSI and OCI tools and has been providing group and individual executive coaching to DISC, MBTI, Decision Dynamics, and other psychometric insight tools over the past 21 years.

Sophie Cleary

After graduating from QUT drama school in 2004, Sophie has worked as a performer on stage and screen for the last twenty years. In 2012 she worked as an actor facilitator on her first large scale organisational leadership transformation program. Since then, she has worked extensively as an Actor, Coach and Facilitator across government and private sectors with some of Australia’s biggest brands.

She is passionate about creating the conditions that enable individuals to get honest with themselves about what’s required of them to reach their leadership potential, and then through experiential learning helps them embed and build new skills.

She is a firm believer that people learn more when they're having a laugh, and is passionate about meeting participants wherever they are in their learning journey to co-create an environment that fosters curiosity, safety and authenticity.
